SHORTLISTED Competition entry produced in collaboration with Architect Geraldine Dening
CONSTRUCTION
The buildings have articulated London yellow stock brick fronts and timber backs. The structure is made entirely of cross laminated timber resulting in fast and clean construction (as we used on the Lauriston School opposite), insulated with thick woodfibre from sustainable sources. Zinc roofs ensure a handsome appearance when seen from the houses behind. Services are neatly and robustly face-fixed making them easy to maintain and change, and safe to update the layouts.
HOUSES
The seven townhouses are arranged in pairs around a shared porch in front of a gated courtyard housing bikes, bins and water butts. The private gardens are back-to-back forming wide penetrations through the brick facades to the mature gardens behind. The brick garden walls to the north catch the southern light during the day.
The plan of each house is generous and loose. They are identical (or mirrored) in form but individually adaptable with various possible kitchen and furniture layouts. Occasional indents in the Gore Road gardens allow pocket gardens on the south facades (ideal for sand pits, kennels, etc). Balconies look east and west, over garden and street, maximising animation and secure observation of the street and maintain privacy towards Gore Road houses.
